New Youtube Channels

I am creating now a bunch of YouTube Channels because of several reasons.

  1. My old channel is a little bit messed up and not sorted well
  2. The videos on my old channels are without and Intro and Outro
  3. I had trouble with Adsense on my old channel (They don’t want to restore my account)
  4. a fresh start and a review of my videos might be helpful to improve my videos
  5. I want to have thing in order because I am planning really cool stuff at the moment for my channels
  6. I started a campaign and I think it is better than Adsense (I hope) and because of that its better to have a better overview what I am doing on my channels.

These are some reasons I create new channels I hope my Subscribers on my old channel will forgive me because I will only update my old channel for announcement of new videos on the new channels.

Maybe some people will get angry with me but I have to move on.

Have a happy day, stay strong and tuned for more to come.

Patreon website of Michael Novelo

Since today the 02.10.2014 my Patreon website is online and ready.

The last few month I was researching for a possibility to refinance my work as Tutor and Blogger and finally I found something wich looks like promising. Patreons concept is a real cool and easy way to get help from viewers. And being a Patron is even easier. Just check out my website.

The need to get some kind of money out of my work as Tutor becomes more and more necessary to me.

Why do I need a Patreon website

I am planning to release a lot of Tutorials, I have so many ideas. But this takes time and time is money. In my case it is true because I am self-employed and every second I cut from my normal daily work, is money which is not in my pocket to cover the living expenses of my family and me. So I have to do something. There are two ways, either to leave it or to find ways to refinance my work as Tutor.

I tried out many ways but these were only tries to find out the best way. And was the coolest thing I found. It’s easy to understand, there’s no dependency on one big player like Adsense or Amazon or cj. There is the possibiliy to give something back to the Patrons. You can interact on the Patreon website with your Patrons and give them the attention which they deserve. You can give out rewards depending how money much a Patreon spends on your creations. A Patreon website is more personal than all the oder crowd funding websites.

Why should you be a Patron

That’s easy, because I need your help like you are seeking mine. Its a win-win situation. You help me by donating a little amount of money and I help you by creating more tutorials.

Start now being a Patron

Just visit my Patreon website and check it out.

Thank you for being my Patron

My journey into the video footage stock market “The Plan”

The plan is to get fast and successful into the video footage stock market. It sounds easy but I need “The Plan” an ultimate plan which brings me to the point I wanna be in the next few month.

First Thoughts

My plan is first to find out which topic is the best for me at the start. Lets have a look at the situation what’s possible and what is not possible at this point of time.

Not possible

  • High Speed Videos
  • extreme Macro
  • Videos with a lot of models involved
  • 3D animation with a lot of render time
  • 4K Videos
  • Flying footage … because i have no Phantom¬† ūüôĀ

  • all kind of video with a resolution of 1920×1080 with DSLR, GoPro and CamCorder
  • all kind 2.7K videos with the GoPro
  • 4K Time Lapse Videos with ¬†the GoPro
  • short 3D animation with a low amount of render time
  • Videos with 1 or 2 models involved

Now that I am clear about what is possible and what not I can now think about some video ideas.

Maybe now is a good time to look at some portfolios of other contributors to see what they are doing and maybe get inspired.

Here are some ideas

  • First idea is that I am using my current 3D stills and think about how to animate them in an interesting way. That seems to be a good start for the 3D animations.
  • Nature! Because it is still green out there it would maybe a good idea to get some fresh air and take some footage of moving leaves, plants, rivers maybe some time lapse of clouds, maybe a sunset or whatever nature brings in front of my lenses
  • Closeups. all kind of business related closeups like hand is moving a mouse, signing some paper, a working printer, pull up phone and so on.
  • Sport videos like running, wake-boarding, snowboarding, skiing, hiking, freeletics

Do I maybe need some more equipment?

If I look at the portfolios of others there are some special camera moves and mounts involved, like a Slider rail, Slide cam mount and a suction cup mount for the GoPro. These mounts are not really expensive but I want to keep the costs down and do my first video footage without buying new things. But with the first earnings I will buy these things.

Setting a goal

So now I have to set a goal. But what? Should I set a goal how much video footage I uploaded or how much I sold or how much I earned? A goal is something you should reach by yourself and not depends on others, so it is the amount of upload I will set as a goal. In the previous Post (link) there was something like a goal. The Alamy upload minimum of 250 video footages. Wow that seems a lot but its a goal. So it is, my first goal is to upload 250 video footages. And of course all these videos should be done in a specific time frame. But how long will it take to do 250 videos. If I do some series it should be possible to do them in about 3 month or so. That means New Years Eve is the deadline.

Time Line

Like I said before, for 3 month from now on the 22. of September 2014 until the 31 of January.

Ok this needs a very strict planning. From now on 17 and a half week.

So that sounds like a plan now to work. I’ll post in a regular frequency whats going on. For this project I will make some changes on the website so that it is easy for you to follow the journey.

My journey into the video footage stock market

In this and in future posts I will describe my journey into the video stock footage market and howto maybe become a successful stock footage contributor. At the moment I am a total blank sheet of paper. I do not know anything about stock footage.

The next few month will post what I am doing and how I doing it to get maybe a successful footage stock market seller. I show you the raw process how I get there. I will show you the success and the fails without any restrictions.

So lets start!

First thoughts

There are so many possibilities in the video footage stock market that I have first to think about which direction I want to choose. The topics are endless.
So where should I head to? Which is the best topic for me.
Lets just make a list what topics are out there.

  • 3D animated short videos
  • Video FX videos
  • Nature videos
  • Food videos
  • Handcraft videos
  • People in Business situations
  • Business situations with just body parts seen in the video
  • Sport action

Now lets think about what equipment I have which is useful to produce Videos

  • Photo Studio 80 m¬≤ (and 2400 m¬≤ available space)
  • Canon 5D Mark II
  • Canon 550D
  • different lenses and Filters
  • Tripods
  • GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition
  • Several mounts for the GoPro
  • Canon Legria HFR506
  • Continuous Studio lights
  • Blender 3D
  • Cinema 4D
  • Adobe After Effects
  • Magicx Video Deluxe
  • Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Camtasia Studio
  • Adobe Photoshop

Next thing is where could I sell my videos I produce and what are the terms for stock footages. There are several questions.

  • What Stock footage Agencies are out there?
  • How is the process to upload and publish the footage
  • What resolution should a footage have?
  • How long should a footage be to get sold?

What Stock footage Agencies are out there?

  • Pond5
  • Shutterstock
  • Fotolia
  • Dreamstime
  • iStockphoto
  • 123rf
  • Depositphotos
  • Alamy

Ok these are 8 Agencies where I contribute Images and they accept also video footage. Thats a start now lets find out what are the terms to upload video footage to these Agencies. I think then I will have the most questions answered.

Pond5 has a Media Guideline so lets have a look.

It seems that they accept all kind of high-quality Cameras like DSLR, Professional Cameras, Consumer Cameras, GoPros and even IPhone 4s videos. The clips should be between 3 and 120 seconds and not larger then 2 GB. And they accept any resolution and frame rate from 320×240 up to 4K in nearly any codec. So Pond5 seems to be a good starting point.

Shutterstock has guidelines for submissions as well. The footage should be at min 480px high and has to be in the 4:3 format. NTSC Standard with 29,97fps is recommended but they accept PAL with 25fps as well. They say they will try to accept nearly all codecs.

So far no restrictions.

The Guidelines¬†of Fotolia are a little bit more specific then on Pond5 and Shutterstock. The resolution is at min 320×240 and max 1920×1080, formats are asf, avi, flv, h264, mov, mpec, mpegts, mpegvideo and the supported codecs are¬†flv, dvvideo, h264, mjpeg, mpeg1video, mpeg2video, mpeg4, rpza, svq1, vp6f, wmv2 and wmv3. The length is minimum 5 sec and maximum 60 seconds. Maximum file size 600mb, FPs 24,25,29.97 or 30fps corresponding to the footage format. A bit more restricted but manageable.

The Guidelines of Dreamstime are not so clear about the technical requirements. What i see they want the mov Quicktime format compressed with the PhotoJPEG or Motion-JPEG(MJPEG) codec and a max length of the footage of 30 seconds. They don’t talk about the resolution minimum but they don’t wanna have upsampled footage. I assume that it is the best for Dreamstime to deliver footage with the MOV format with a resolution of 1920×1080¬†and 24, 25, 29,97 or 30 fps.

There is a training manual on iStockphoto. The video footage should be 5 to 30 seconds in length. They accept to formats, the MP4 format with a max resolution of 640×360 with¬†24 up to 30 fps and the MOV format with a max resolution of 1920×1080 with¬†24 up to 30 fps. To be able to upload some footage to iStockphoto you have to read the manual and do a test and then they want that you upload 3 sample videos as an Application.

I haven’t found any specific guideline. I assume that it is the best to deliver in the highest quality and the best format.

Depositphotos seems to accept nearly all formats and codecs. The minimum resolution is 320×240 and the maximum is 1920×1080. Minimum length of the footage is 3 seconds and the maximum is 60 seconds. Maximum file size is 1 GB.

The Alamy Guideline tells us that they want the files as mov format and with Photo JPEG, H.264, MJPEG, ProRes 422, DV or HDV. The minimum resolution is 720×480 and the maximum is 1920×1080. Minimum length of the footage is 3 seconds and the maximum is 60 seconds.¬†¬†But the most difficult thing is that they want for your Application a link of existing stock video work and a minimum of 250 clips to submit per submission.
That seems to be a lot of work.

I am sure out there are a few more Agencies but I think to work with these 8 agencies should be enough for the start. iStockphoto and Alamy has to wait until I have some really good stuff and then I will send them my Applications.

Where to start

Now that I know with which Agencies I can work with at the start, it is time to do some research and make a plan where to start. At the beginning I want to work with 6 Agencies Pond5, Shutterstock, Fotolia, Dreamstime, 123rf and Depositphotos. Now I think I am going to bring all my technical stuff togheter an do a little bit of Brainstorming.

My next post about my journey to be a successful stock footage contributor will be about “The Plan” .

Tapas a delicious Photoshooting

This kind of Photo-shooting is one of my favorite. Especially when no Foodartist is involved which ruins the food with strange chemicals and coloring and so on.
These Tapas were so delicious that all the models haven’t survived the shooting. ūüėČ

The Space Academy is on the way

The Space Academy is on the way. That means first steps are done, the Domains are registered and first projects scenes are in development. I will post the next days a few more information.

There will be an Newsletter on the new Website for you to register and always be up to date about the developing of the Space Academy.

The next days I am working on a rough layout of the Logo and the Website as soon I release it you will get informed via Facebook, Google+, Twitter or E-mail whatever your platform of choice is.

Next week I will test my new audio equipment for recording. It was time for an update of the microphone so i decided to invest a little bit into a microphone and a mixer. The new Mic is a Rode nt1a with a Behringer mixer xenyx 302 USB, So I hope the audio quality will be constant and with a high quality standard over the whole Workshop.

Blender “The death of Obi Wan Kenobi “

Death of Obi Wan Kenobi

This image is named “The death of Obi Wan Kenobi” it’s inspired by the death scene in Star Wars Episode IV.

The Idea and Making of “The death of Obi Wan Kenobi” in Blender

The Idea was to create a keyscene of Star Wars but my problem was iam not a character designer so i came up with the idea of a just used lightsaber on the ground with the cloak of Obi Wan Kenobi in the background and the shadow of Darth Vader on the ground. But first i had to model the Lightsaber, its was a task to find a good reference but then I found the site of Roland Palotai RO-Lightsaber. I was blown away by the amazing handcrafted Lightsabers. This site is really worth a look and a paradise for all Star Wars fans. After the modeling I UV unwrapped the whole model piece by piece. Then i created the normal maps with ndo2 by Quixel. The textures are some textures from CGTextures but alternated in Adobe Photoshop.

Lightsaber first render

Lightsaber first render

I posted my first attempt into the Facebook Blender Community. After posting i have got some really good critique and suggestion to make the image better.

After doing a few test I made the first proof of concept.

Scene proof of concept

The next step was to improve the cloak, the position of the Lightsaber, textures and the shadow. For the textures I had to use a

Getting closer to the final image.

Getting closer to the final image.

The composition looked good but the smoke and the shadow of Darth Vader was to strong and the texture of the cloak was not good enough to call it final. Even the lighting was not right. So i followed a suggestion from a member of the Facebook Blender group to lower the HDR lighting and using 3 kinds of lamps. A red lamp to get Darth Vaders red lightsaber into the game a Spot lamp to lit the saber from the front and a blue mesh lamp from above to have a contrast color to the red lamp.

The image above is what Blender has given to me without using the compositor. The rest of the work was done in Photoshop. The smoke was added with a smoke brush. For the shadow of Darth Vader i painted a black silutette of Darth Vader bended it and putted it on the ground with a very low opacity to give just the idea of the shadow so that the shadow isn’t dominating the scene. Then i added a color ramp to darken the upper part of the image.

For the help and the critique i have to say thanks to the Blender Community out there.

Have a nice day!

Blog and Youtube Channels

Right now i doing a review on my website, because I think its a little bit confusing. There is the startpage, the blog, the tutorial page and artwork page and so on. I think thats a litte bit to much, i thought in the past i have to split up all of my sites because of mr. google and SEO and other optimization stuff. But it is a pain in the … to keep a construction like this running and up to date. I decided to only keep my start page and my Tutorial page. The start page or will be the main website of Visual-Pixels. You will find there the recent blog entries, my artwork and page links to my google+ and facebook pages.
The tutorial website will still remain as extra page because of some technical issus which i have to deal with. The blog will stay the next few month still online but there will be no more new posts. All news and posts are in the future directly to find on or
So please be patience with me and check out my Website.

The oposite thing happens to my Youtube Channels. I split my channel in sperate channels to be a little bit more focused. Each channel will have only one topic. Iam working currently on 4 Channels, a Blender Channel, a Cinema 4D Channel a Photoshop Channel and a Digital Imaging Channel. In the Blender Channel will go only topics wich are related to Blender the same for the Cinema 4D channel. The Digital Imaging Channel will contain all the Tutorials which have different topics in digital imaging like Photographie, GIMP and Inkscape. On my actuall channel I will not longer post any new tutorials. Only teasers and Demoreels for tutorials, workshops or recent finished work i have done (and I am allowed to show).

Because iam working the next few days on the redoing, it may be that some posts I shared in the past will be posted again because of the social sharing plugin of WordPress. So please forgive me if there are some or many posts you have seen in the past.

Ok I think thats all at the moment.

Have a nice day

The Space Academy

Tutorial Series Project an Idea is on the way

New Projects and Tutorials Series on the way.

The Idea of the new Tutorial Series Project

Since a few weeks I’am playing around with and idea of publishing new and fresh tutorials on my Tutorial Website. The Theme of the tutorials will be Science Fiction, Spaceships, SciFi-Scenes and futuristic Environments. I’m thinking to give the whole thing the title “The Space Academy”. At this time right now i am at the beginning of the process to make the tutorials. I prepared a lot of Tutorials about different materials in the last few month and that’s by the way the reason i have not published one tutorial the last few month. And i think it will take some more time until I publish another tutorial because I want to integrate these tutorials in my new idea of “The Space Academy”. The name has absolutely nothing to do with the Nature Academy or Architecture Academy of Andrew Price, he’s a great guy and really a Blenderguru. The name is because the first thing i thought about was Wesley Crusher in TNG when he went on the Starfleet Academy.

I have prepared over 60 Material Tutorials, yes you heard right over 60!!. For all these Tutorials i have written step by step Tutorials to publish them together with the video tutorials. These written Tutorials are 6 up to 15 pages long for every Material, that means I have written over 600 pages of tutorial steps. For 40 % of the Tutorial i have made just the video as well, but its only raw material and they are not edited right now. A lot work but was never happy about the concept. I posted in the last few days some Images on Facebook and Google+. My plan was to discover how much interest is out there for this topic. I have to beg the community for forgiveness that I acted like a semi noob. But I wanted to be criticized on the workflow and where i have to prevent errors. The response was amazing. I liked the comments very much because they showed me what the community wants to see. Thank to all reviewers.

Here’ is a little example what i am talking about.

Tutorial Series Project "The Space Academy"

What can you learn.

The Tutorials will cover the whole process of creating a still life like the image above.

  • Basic and Advanced modelling Technics.
  • how to create realistic Materials in Blender
  • advanced normal map Technics with Photoshop, Gimp, ndo2, xnormals and crazy bumb
  • how to create a HDR lightning environment
  • creating complex light setups
  • and much more.

more Ideas

Yes there is more. I am thinking about going the extra mile with these tutorials. I am thinking of showing you how to take Texture images with a Professional Equipment in my Studio and in the nature(For the Neerds nature is that funny thing behind your window)  and how you can do it without a fancy equipment. Maybe i am able to show how to take footage for integrating a model in a real world scene. The thing is i want to show you the whole process from the very beginning to the bloody end.

But remember this is just an idea of an upcoming project, there are so many things still to do.
